Asbestos in schools

Asbestos was banned in the UK in 1999, but many schools built or refurbished before then still contain it. Most of it is safe if it is in good condition and undisturbed, which is why careful management matters so much.

We support schools, trusts and local authorities with surveys, management plans and removal, scheduling work around term times and keeping staff, pupils and parents informed.

Asbestos in schools carried out on site

Where asbestos is found in school buildings

  • Ceiling tiles and boards
  • Pipe lagging in boiler and plant rooms
  • Floor tiles and adhesives
  • Roofs, soffits and cement panels
  • Partitions, fire doors and service ducts
  • Textured coatings on walls and ceilings

Your legal duties

Whoever is responsible for maintaining a school has a duty to manage asbestos. In practice this means knowing where it is, assessing its condition, keeping an up-to-date register and plan, and making sure staff and contractors are told before they work in affected areas.

Managing it or removing it

If materials are in good condition and unlikely to be disturbed, they can usually be managed in place. If they are damaged, in a high-traffic area or about to be disturbed by building work, removal is the safer choice. We advise on both routes.

How we do the work

  1. Review your records

We look at your existing asbestos register, surveys and management plan, and note gaps.

  2. Survey and assess

A trained surveyor inspects the buildings, samples suspect materials and rates the condition of each.

  3. Plan the response

We agree whether materials will be managed in place or removed, and when, to keep disruption low.

  4. Remove where required

Work is done by licensed or non-licensed teams as the material requires, usually out of hours or in school holidays.

  5. Certify and update

After removal we inspect and provide clearance documentation, and your register is updated.

Asbestos waste is double-bagged, sealed and taken by a registered carrier to an authorised disposal site. You receive a waste consignment note as your legal record.

Questions about asbestos in schools

Is asbestos still present in schools?

Yes, in many that were built or refurbished before 2000. Most is safe if undisturbed and in good condition.

Can asbestos be managed without removal?

Often, yes. Regular inspection, clear records and staff awareness keep risk low.

How often should a school inspect for asbestos?

Known materials should be reviewed at regular intervals, commonly every 12 months, and after any damage or building work.

Can work take place when the school is open?

Some can, with careful separation. Higher-risk work is normally timed for holidays or evenings.
